  • Description:Garfield is one of the first cats we took into our sanctuary. He was already neutered when we found him, so he was obviously dumped after living in a comfortable home. He got adopted for a year, then was surrendered back to us; his owners claimed that they would take him back after they finish renovating their home, but they never asked about him again. He was obviously neglected, as his bowls, food and everything that was surrendered with him were very dirty and moldy.
He got very depressed when he came back to the shelter and his health deteriorated. We did all the necessary tests and they all came back normal, so we assumed that he was just extremely sad. However, we noticed that he was barely eating and moving, so we took him back to the vet, and it turned out that he suffered from kidney failure. His kidneys were at a complete stop. We were told that his condition was triggered by the neglect he went through with his previous owners, as he was still young to suffer from kidney failure.
We started giving him renal food, but he is very picky with food and refused to eat properly, so he still has IV injections. A woman finally accepted to foster him, which drastically improved his mental health. The vet comes over to his foster home to put him on IV, limiting his stress levels. We know that his condition is critical and that he might cross the rainbow bridge at any time, but we want him to be in a happy home and to be eating again.
Garfield is a fighter, he almost died, his temperature dropped and we had to dig his grave and get the vet to make sure these were his last breaths. But at the last minute, out of the blue, he decided he was not ready to give up and opened his eyes again.
He is now very happy, even though he is very skinny and barely eating. The IV injections improve his appetite, but he still struggles to eat, as kidney failure suppresses appetite in cats.
We hope Garfield lives as long and comfortably as possible.
  • Notes:Garfield is happily adopted in Mexico. You will not find him at the shelter, we just wanted to share her happy ending with you.
